How did the Contexto Programme come about?

In Spain when Organic Law 1/2004 of Integral Protection Measures against Intimate Partner Violence Against Women came into force, the legal system referred those perpetrators sentenced for intimate partner violence against women (with a prison sentence lasting less than 2 years and with no previous criminal background) to intervention programmes that are held in a community setting.

The Contexto Programme started in 2006 as, among other reasons, a response to the lack of the resources in the Valencia Province for this law to be complied with.

This programme is the result of close collaboration among the research team led by Prof. Marisol Lila from the Department of Social Psychology of the Universitat de València, the PSIMA Association (Social Professionals in the Intervention of Abuse) and the Management of the Centre of Social Insertion of Picassent (Prison Institutions. Home Office, Spain).
